“The purpose of our meeting was to introduce Jarman International and its ‘Train to Globalize’ division. I have been visiting Guam since around 2008, working with Shaw/CB&I Federal Services/APTIM on various government-related projects. Over the years, I’ve built many relationships on the island and wanted to explore how Jarman International can contribute to the local government, businesses, and students in the following ways.”

Commercial corporations: “In my present work advising Japanese-American joint venture construction companies in Guam, I have observed a lack of awareness around cultural differences. This lack of understanding often leads to negative outcomes. Providing training on these critical differences could improve business operations and outcomes for commercial entities.”

Government entities: “By deepening their understanding of cross-cultural differences, the government can better facilitate partnerships with international companies. This will not only enhance the success of the invited companies but also result in mutually beneficial outcomes.”

Students: “Last year, I gave a cross-cultural presentation to high school students through Pacific Human Resources Services (PHRS) Guam. I believe students can gain valuable insights into how to succeed in a global organization, and I’d like to offer more of these educational opportunities.”

“My goal during this initial visit was to provide an overview of our corporate history, capabilities, and current projects. If we identify any gaps that we can fill to support Guam’s needs, Jarman International will be more than happy to assist.”

International ambassadors to Japan, including those from the United Republic of Tanzania, Singapore, Liberia, Rwanda, and more, periodically meet with Japanese government representatives to engage in meaningful discussions.

On June 17, Head of Train to Globalize (educational service) at Jarman International, Austin Auger, was invited as a speaker to share his expertise on cross-cultural communication. Auger reflects on his reflection as follows:

“I was deeply honored and grateful for the opportunity to present insights regarding my specialty of successfully navigating intercultural differences. We particularly focused on the aspect of communication, and its impacts on business transactions between Japan and the ambassadors’ respective countries. The session was interactive, and we discussed various scenarios, exploring ways to achieve win-win situations for successful business ventures. I am sincerely thankful to the ambassadors and dignitaries for their active engagement and keen interest to further strengthen partnerships and achieve even more effective collaboration.”

With support from Mark Tofflemire, Fukiko Yoshino, Kayoko Saito, Melissa Henrique and a short presentation on Japan’s accelerating domestic internationalization by Jarman International’s CEO Ruth Marie Jarman, Austin began with a self-assessment test so that participants could gain a deeper understanding of their own talents. The team then engaged participants with lectures, group activities and communication challenges. Based on Austin’s fundamental training philosophy of “soar with your strength”, he provided insight and guidance on the leadership and communication skills to further success in their diverse and exciting organization.

Auger further reflects on the experience saying, “we have had the opportunity to assist JAL for the past six years, and I have witnessed their positive transformation in addressing client shifts while also meeting the culturally diverse demands of their employees. I really enjoy interacting with JAL’s participants from around the world because they are so dedicated and eager to do their best to improve the company. I am very grateful for the opportunity to share the knowledge I have gained from my experiences around the world and over many years.”

Indeed, they are our future leaders.” 

On May 7th, Jarman International’s partner, Austin Auger, spoke to the students of Meiji University who are considering studying abroad. At the heart of the speech was a commitment to help empower young minds and shape Japan’s future through a more global education. 

“The presentation I delivered aimed to underscore the benefits of international exposure for learning and experiencing diverse social behaviors, business practices, and communication styles. It also encouraged students to compare these experiences with the familiar Japanese cultural environment they currently inhabit. This serves as a foundation for self-discovery, enabling them to identify their strengths and areas for improvement. They can learn how to set goals, measure progress, and ultimately achieve their objectives. I urge them not to fear making mistakes but rather to take calculated risks to deepen their experiences further.”

As the Japanese government set the bold target of nearly doubling international enrollment by 2033, Austin’s speech was a timely beacon of guidance amidst the significant changes happening across the country in terms of globalization.

This was followed by three interactive sessions facilitated by JI Partner and trainer, Austin Auger, on how to identify your strengths and weaknesses (using the Belbin Team Roles Assessment), differences in communication styles (high-context vs. low-context) across cultures, and how to be a good listener and communicator to increase innovation and organizational capabilities.

Thanks to the enthusiasm and open-mindedness of all five participants, the day was a tremendous success.

During the seminar, JI Project Manager Paul Walsh spoke about “The Potential of Central Shizuoka and Strategies for Attracting Inbound Tourists,” while JI Partner Austin Auger focused on the topic of “Cross-Cultural Communication.” The presentations were followed by a lively group discussion where participants were given the challenge of coming up with an itinerary for a tour introducing local attractions.

Shizuoka is a high-potential region with many places that make for great visual content. We hope we helped many local officials develop a more global way of looking at things, and that they will apply what they learned as they develop and implement strategies for attracting people from around the world to this wonderful prefecture.

Some of them stayed at a little ryokan at Amami station on the way and others in the group stayed at a Station house hotel by Nankai in Koyashita station. They took a Nankai Line train between Nankai-Namba (Osaka) and Koyasan (Wakayama). It was such a great trip to spend a peaceful moment by taking local trains compared with using a plane or bullet train (Shinkansen).

When it comes to “travel,” as typified by the package tours, people tended to go sightseeing efficiently, as much as they could in the limited time, however, it seems that the current trend shifts to the style that people prefer to the travelling style of “slow, calm, and with families and friends (in the small group).” And also, long-term residents who haven’t traveled around Japan (especially to the small towns and villages) until now will try to do sightseeing instead of traveling to foreign countries and rediscover the charm of Japan.

Although it was just a part of 2-day business trip covered Kansai area and we could stay Koyasan not that long, this trip brought us a great realization of the new traveling style in the new normal era.
We definitely recommend to go to Koyasan at the first onset of new traveling style!
