Deep Japan – Gorgeous and Exotic “Pontocho” in Kyoto!

“Yuka” platform – Elegant evening of Terrace riverside dining

At night, Kamogawa riverside is turned to be the scenic site well-known for its gorgeous Pontocho in Kyoto! I used to take my friends visiting Kyoto to Pontocho without fail. I just love their atmosphere – the traditional lantern lights in their narrow street are really exotic.

Summer is here and now there are about 100 “Yuka” platforms from restaurants located along the river. They are one of the best ways to dine in Kyoto. There are many kinds of cuisine available such as Kyoto Kaiseki, traditional Izakaya, Sumibi-yaki or Yakitori (charcol grilled), Sushi, Tempura, Sukiyaki, Italian, French, Beef, Asian foods etc…

Maiko-san and Geisha-san in Pontocho

There is the theater of Geiko/Maiko at the end of the Pontocho street. So if you’re lucky, you may come across the beautiful Maiko walking on the street or enjoy dining with their guests. They have Kamogawa Odori (Kamo River Dance) during May. You can purchase advanced tickets and watch beautiful Geisha and Maiko dancing in such colorful and gorgeous kimonos. I have enjoyed watching their spectacular dance several times and I am deeply moved and satisfied whenever I go. You should definitely try this if you visit Kyoto in May.

You can enjoy the Yuka riverside dining until the end of September. Relax, keep cool, and enjoy an elegant evening of terrace riverside dining along Kamo River.
