The main bar (there’s also a self-serve lounge) is a sultry stunner. Behind a 13-meter-long teak counter, a picture window shows Mt. Sengen by day and the illuminated boughs of the garden’s cherry tree by night. The armchairs arranged in pairs along the counter appear like thrones in the dim lighting, each couple well beyond the pool of light cast for its neighbors, creating a curious feeling of privacy. Lounge chairs and banquettes around a marble-ringed fireplace also provide places to canoodle, while the gentle aroma of wood smoke and the softly dancing flames create a soothing ambiance.

The lines were blurring the moment I entered through grand doors fashioned from oak, and met Ryuichi Yanagi, a bartender role-playing as a receptionist. His front desk was a droll creation: a posh leather writing mat and fancy brass pen plonked, for the duration of the Champagne-fueled check-in process, on one end of a 13-meter teak bar counter.

In November, one of our partners, Bar Hotel Hakone Kazan welcomed Nicholas Coldicott, an author who has written extensively about Tokyo’s drink and food scene across a variety of platforms including Conde Nast Traveller and Time Out Tokyo. Now, he has published a beautifully expressive and deeply insightful article on the Japan Times about his experience at Bar Hotel – a chic, James Bond-like lodge nestled in the glorious mountains of the famous hot spring town, Hakone.

Around this time, my friend opined that the bar/hotel was the best bar and best hotel we had been to. “I can relax here,” she said. “Not like in those hoity-toity places.” That’s more damning of her than those places, but her point was this: The bartenders are skilled at scaling their presentations up or down to suit their audience. Nobody felt intimidated, nobody patronized.

Classy. Chic. Luxurious. How can I visualize these words?

While I was editing the new video for our Japan Travel Stories YouTube channel about the experience of visiting Bar Hotel Hakone Kazan, I thought about how I could match the visuals to the classiness one feels as they sit at the bar’s wooden counter or beside the beautiful fireplace with Hibiki whiskey in their hand. Collaborating ideas with Jarman’s CEO, Ruth, I decided to incorporate a calming dark and mature tone by using soft Jazz music with the sound of light rain in the background and chic images like that of sweet champagne. I am incredibly passionate about figuring out ways to translate the spirit of a story, memory, experience or place through visual media and hopefully bring a sense of escape, relaxation or inspiration to the viewer.

Daiyuzan Saijo-ji is a breathtaking Buddhist temple that was built more than 615 years ago. Although it is still frequented by devout worshipers from all across Japan, it remains one of the less talked about magnificent places in Kanagawa Prefecture. This is probably due to the fact that Daiyuzan Saijo-ji is obscurely located in the mountain forests of Odawara’s Hakone – but trust me, that’s all the more reason you should visit. No matter how many times I go, it remains one of the most impressive places I’ve ever been to.

The path leading to the temple is surrounded by an ancient grove of towering cedar trees (allergy sufferer’s beware) that cast otherworldly shadows across the sprawling temple grounds. Legend has it, the assistant to the founder is said to have been turned into an eternal caretaker in the form of a goblin, which is why you’ll be astounded by the numerous statues of goblins and goblin related items at the temple.

Words can do no justice to how marvelous Daiyuzan Saijo-ji is. Whether you enjoy temple hunting, hiking, or taking photographs – Daiyuzan Saijo-ji will simply blow you away.

And if you happen to love beer, then you can always hit the nearby Asahi Brewery for a free beer tour!

Without a car, it’s not the easiest location to reach – but not impossible. I guarantee the trip will be worth it, though.
