Jarman International sent JI Core 50 members Paul Walsh and Sophie Chow to join the wild and hidden Extreme Onsen tour in Fukushima Prefecture, guided by Café & Activity Nowhere.

The Extreme Onsen tour involves hiking roughly 40–60 minutes through natural scenery to Numajiri Motoyu, a spring of natural, mineral-rich hot water. The hot spring was discovered during the Edo period (1603–1868), and the quality of its water is said to be among the highest in Japan. Tour participants can enjoy a soak among the dozens of natural hot spring pools, called yatenburo in Japanese, halfway up Mt Adatara.

Paul Walsh and Sophie Chow on the Extreme Onsen tour

“The mountain path isn’t heavily maintained, so you can still see the untouched natural landscape,” Sophie said of the tour. “As we hiked, the guide explained the local history and the background of the hot spring. Nomajiri Onsen flows down like a waterfall from the mountain, forming small natural pools where visitors can bathe in swimwear. This type of experience is extremely rare even within Japan. However, because some areas have relatively high sulfur levels, it’s safer to go with a local guide. After completing the entire route, Paul and I also shared some feedback and suggestions with the guide and the organizers regarding the overall experience.”

The Extreme Onsen tour is also promoted by the government’s Greater Tokyo and Edo Shogun Roads tourism initiatives, which aim to entice visitors into the prefectures surrounding the metropolis.

Based in Inawashiro Town, Fukushima Prefecture, the outdoor activity organization Café & Activity Nowhere runs a campground and other activities, such as mountain biking, in addition to the Extreme Onsen tour.

Consulting for tourism activities is one of Jarman International’s core services, and we are honored to be able to contribute to amazing experiences in special locations such as this.

Important announcement for all non-Japanese passport holders! For travel to Nagano Prefecture to see the snow monkeys (and anywhere across Tohoku), we recommend you take advantage of the JR EAST Welcome Rail Pass 2020!

Until now, JR Rail Passes have only been available to tourists visiting Japan. However, this year, JR EAST created this new, foreign resident-friendly pass to give members of Japan’s international community a budget-friendly way to explore the Tohoku and Kanto regions, as well as provide an alternative to international travel.

This pass will allow 3 consecutive days of unlimited travel on the Tohoku, Yamagata, Akita, Joetsu and Hokuriku Shinkansens, along with JR EAST train lines and a number of local railways. As it is valid for a large area of Japan, pass holders will be able to explore from the northernmost reaches of Aomori to the hot spring resorts of Shizuoka, just south of Tokyo, for a flat 12,000 yen fee (6,000 yen for Children).

★For more information about the JR EAST Welcome Rail Pass 2020 and where to purchase it, please click HERE

★An article about the pass has been published on JAPAN TODAY

Whether a spa enthusiast or first timer, Enoshima Island Spa is an affordable, luxurious experience not soon forgotten.

As someone who’s lived in the Shonan area for over ten years, regular trips to Enoshima Island were par for the course. My only regret was that it took me as long as it did to discover the island’s true hidden gem: Enoshima Island Spa. For less than 3000 yen, you can spend an entire day relaxing in one or all of their various indoor and outdoor pools, as well as their sauna. The pools have marvelous views of the beach and ocean, and on a clear day one can even gaze upon Mt. Fuji.

“Enospa”, as it’s regularly called, is a Japanese onsen resort located just an hour from central Tokyo. In addition to the mineral-rich natural hot springs that fill their pools, pumped from 1,500 meters below the ocean, one can also find relief with a variety of treatments at their Beng Teng Spa and Yumemi Shiatsu Salon. Hungry? Try one of their cafes or even fine dining at their Island Grill Restaurant. There’s so much they offer to keep you entertained while you recover from fatigue and beautify your skin to achieve better peace of mind. It’s no wonder why Enospa has been rated one of the top 10 day spas at TripAdvisor for four years running.

No matter the season, you’ll find refreshing comfort at Enospa. Their facilities are pristine and run by knowledgeable, professional staff who will treat you like a king or queen. I’m a regular visitor there and can’t say enough about the place; one of my go-to things to do when I need a break or recharge from the daily grind.

The great thing about spending a day at Enospa is once you’re finished, you can enjoy everything else the popular island has to offer!

Nothing better than a warm onsen bath on a cold winter day!

The view of Mt Fuji from Enoshima Island Spa is especially good in winter. You can watch the sun set behind Mt Fuji while you take a warm bath or dine at the restaurant Island Grill.

The Enoshima Island Spa is bolstering its image as a “ Japanese onsen resort with the view of Mt. Fuji”, and identifying itself as the number one resort destination in the greater Tokyo area, complete with hot spring (onsen), healthy meals, exercise courses, relaxing aroma therapy treatment, Shiatsu massage experience and an all-around pleasant destination for tourists and residents alike.

Making your way to the cultural power spot, being healed by the expansive Shonan coastline and Enospa therapy, it will be truly a luxurious day to yourself that you won’t soon forget. Enoshima healing power gives you a sense that tomorrow will be a different day, that tomorrow you can begin anew and rejuvenated. We would love for you to experience the powerful day of healing.

In addition to Trip advisor review site as well as the Enospa facebook page, our English landing page can give you a good idea of what to expect at Enospa, and put your inquiry and research in the right direction.

Massages or other treatment packages, etc. would be separate and we recommend making reservations by email in advance.

As temperatures around the country fall, now is the perfect time to indulge in the Japanese pastime of onsen. Best described as a hot spring bathing spa, onsen is a long held tradition in Japan and the near endless supply of geothermal springs is the one positive aspect of living in a nation of constantly shifting tectonic plates. Below are some of the best onsen in Japan.

Kurokawa Onsen, Kyushu

The island of Kyushu is known for being perhaps the best area for onsen, and Kurokawa Onsen is probably the pick of the bunch. Located around 20 kilometers (12 miles) from Mount Aso, it is a beautiful town that has retained its traditional charm and resisted the big money lure of the concrete and neon spa hotels you find elsewhere. Kurokawa Onsen is particularly well known for its ‘rotenburo’ (outside baths) next to rushing rivers, such as Yamamizuki bath, considered one of the best riverside baths in Japan.

Beppu Onsen, Oita

Another Kyushu based onsen area, Beppu, in Oita prefecture, is one of the country’s best know, and produces eight different springs. One of the most remarkable things about the onsen in Beppu, aside from the fact that you can see the steam rising up all over the city, is the variety of bath types. Rather than just having hot water onsen, Beppu also boasts steam baths, hot mud baths and sand baths where bathers are buried in naturally heated sand. If you want to try out the latter, head to Takegawara Spa. It was constructed in 1879 and it perhaps Beppu’s most famous bathhouse. Though be warned, the building is partially surrounded by a red light district.

Kusatsu Onsen, Gunma

Located in the mountains of Gunma at 1200 meters (4,000 ft) above sea level, Kusatsu Onsen is probably Japan’s most popuar spa, and has been listed in Japan’s Top 100 Onsen at number one for the last 12 years in a row. The high quality water, as much as 32,300 liters of it being discharged every year making it the greatest quantity in Japan, is said to cure all diseases bar love sickness. The unique bathing method of jikanyu (where bathers sit in 48 degree water for exactly three minutes) and yumomi (stirring the water with long planks for cooling the temperature of the water, also serving as an important pre-bathing exercise) are customs that have been passed down since the Edo period.

Happy Annoucement!

After two years of very hard work bringing in fantastic international guests who love hot springs, beautiful views, Mt. Fuji, the ocean and aromatherapy, Enoshima Island Spa was named the 10th most popular day spa in Japan by Trip Advisor. All we did was bring this amazing spa to the world via the various Jarman International channels and when people started to come, they started to spread the word. That word made numbers go from 0 each month to now… over 200 international visitors a month and it seems everyone enjoys their time. The spa is proud that trip advisor fans saw the value and made this spa receive a very high and wonderfully exciting ranking. I guess we can say that we now have proof that this day spa is worth a visit.

Heated pools, natural hot spring water from 1500 meters below the ocean, friendly staff, views of Mt. Fuji…what more do you need? Have a break, Have an Enospa smile emotion!
