If you’re a foreign passport holder, you might know that you can take advantage of the JR EAST PASS (Tohoku area), which unlocks five consecutive days of unlimited travel across northern Japan for only 20,000 YEN (10,000 YEN for children).

However, the great question remains…where should you go?

For those who might be overwhelmed by the plethora of must-visit destinations in the vast lands of Tohoku, check out the wonderful five-day, four-night itinerary included in this Tokyo Weekender article! From healing your soul in the rose bath hot springs of Iwate and learning about the legendary namahage (troll-type demons) in Akita, to savoring the famous, melt-in-your-mouth apple pie in Aomori, this itinerary is the perfect introduction to Tohoku’s charm.

Travel back to 17th-century Japan from anywhere in the world on February 20 at 2:30PM (JST)! (Nikko, Tochigi Prefecture)

Among the beautiful mountains of Nikko in Tochigi Prefecture, there is a world where samurai roam the streets with their katana swords tucked into their traditional kimono obi (belt), ninja will teach you concealment techniques, local restaurants serve Japanese delicacies enjoyed over 400 years ago…and everything else related to life during the Edo period (1603 – 1868).

On February 20 starting at 2:30PM (JST), there will be a free, online tour where you’ll be guided around this history theme park called Edo Wonderland, and simultaneously discover Nikko, located just two hours away from Tokyo.

The tour will also feature an exclusive look into the VIP lounge at Nikko station, a Q&A session about travel in Tohoku and helpful information on the JR EAST PASS, and more.

Discover Tohoku’s sake and culture with John Gauntner and Alex Kerr (Yonezawa, Yamagata Prefecture)

In early November, Jarman International collaborated with JEKI (the marketing sector of East Japan Railway) and JNTO New York to organize a webinar, which highlighted the deep culture and delicious sake of the northeastern Tohoku region.

The guest speakers were John Gauntner, the world’s leading non-Japanese sake expert, and Alex Kerr, the highly respected Japanologist who has written multiple award-winning books about the nuances of Japan’s culture and history such as “Lost Japan” (1996). The webinar was broadcasted from one of Tohoku’s largest sake warehouses at the over 400-year-old Toko brewery in Yonezawa, Yamagata Prefecture.

During the innovative webinar, participants located in Japan and New York were able to directly taste Toko sake along with John and Alex, as they were sent a selection of bottles in advance. John introduced the characteristics of Tohoku sake and tips on how to best enjoy this traditional Japanese drink, while Alex offered insights on the region’s landscape and culture that set it apart from other areas of Japan.
