However, the great question remains…where should you go?

For those who might be overwhelmed by the plethora of must-visit destinations in the vast lands of Tohoku, check out the wonderful five-day, four-night itinerary included in this Tokyo Weekender article! From healing your soul in the rose bath hot springs of Iwate and learning about the legendary namahage (troll-type demons) in Akita, to savoring the famous, melt-in-your-mouth apple pie in Aomori, this itinerary is the perfect introduction to Tohoku’s charm.

We say ‘introduction’ here because five days is surely not enough for you to explore all of Tohoku. Hopefully, by the end of your trip, you will be itching to come back and continue your travels in this still undiscovered, hidden gem in Japan.

Tohoku is also home to glorious cherry blossom spots. Check out this Japan Today article to learn more!

While it is easy to think it just so happens magically, in reality of course, there are dedicated, passionate and extremely thorough cleaning staff that keep it that way.

JI Core 50 member and popular YouTuber of the ONLY in JAPAN channel, John Daub, gives the world an exclusive inside look at how the JR EAST Environment Access (JEA) cleaning staff keeps JR Ueno Station absolutely spotless every single day. From the JEA team’s morning meeting, to train track work, and cleaning the trains, vending machines, as well as toilets, witness the day-in-the-life of the heroes who keep the people of Japan’s everyday commute safe, reliable and comfortable.

It has been 10 years since the Great East Japan Earthquake devastated much of the Tohoku region, located in the northeastern portion of Japan’s mainland. As a way to help assist in the region’s recovery, one of our partners, East Japan Railway Company, has begun the Tohoku Destination Campaign since April, which will last until September 30. Why not take this opportunity to travel to Tohoku and discover its beauty?

Important announcement for all non-Japanese passport holders! For travel to Tohoku, we recommend you take advantage of the JR EAST Welcome Rail Pass 2020!

Until now, JR Rail Passes have only been available to tourists visiting Japan. However, this year, JR EAST created this new, foreign resident-friendly pass to give members of Japan’s international community a budget-friendly way to explore the Tohoku and Kanto regions, as well as provide an alternative to international travel.

This pass will allow 3 consecutive days of unlimited travel on the Tohoku, Yamagata, Akita, Joetsu and Hokuriku Shinkansens, along with JR EAST train lines and a number of local railways. As it is valid for a large area of Japan, pass holders will be able to explore from the northernmost reaches of Aomori to the hot spring resorts of Shizuoka, just south of Tokyo, for a flat 12,000 yen fee (6,000 yen for Children).

★For more information about the JR EAST Welcome Rail Pass 2020 and where to purchase it, please click HERE

As part of our promotional effort, JI Core 50 Consultant and popular YouTuber John Daub used this rail pass to travel around Tohoku and introduce the region’s culture, food, and history, to his viewers tuning in from all over the world.

In one of his livestreams, he attempted the all-you-can-eat wanko soba challenge, which is a traditional buckwheat noodle dish from Morioka City, Iwate prefecture. The challenge is to quickly eat one-bite servings of the soba noodles and get your small bowl refilled repetitively until it is impossible to eat anymore.

How many bowls do you think John managed to eat? Watch the video below to find out!
